A Plaque For Jean
Honouring
Jean Holmes-Morris
A Legacy of Care and Dedication
A poignant reminder of the invaluable contributions of the Windrush generation, a plaque was installed to honour Jean Holmes-Morris at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in Basingstoke. This achievement, realised after months of calling for and collaboration, serves as a powerful testament to the impact of community advocacy.
Arriving in England from Jamaica in 1962 at the age of 19, Jean dedicated her life to serving the Basingstoke community. She began her career as a nurse at Park Prewett Hospital, caring for patients with compassion and dedication. Her commitment to nurturing the next generation of healthcare professionals led her to roles at King Alfred College and Basingstoke School, where she mentored and inspired countless students for over 25 years.
The unveiling of this plaque in 2023 holds immense significance. It not only honours Jean Holmes-Morris's remarkable career but also serves as a powerful symbol of recognition for the contributions of the Windrush generation to our community. This achievement also reinforces the importance of persistent advocacy and demonstrates that through collective action, we can ensure that the stories and legacies of our community's heroes and heroines are remembered and celebrated.
Hampshire Cultural Trust, in partnership with the Basingstoke Caribbean Society and Friends, led by Chair Grace Powell, and with the support of Effie Blankson, Chair of Kikoi Connection, commemorated the 75th anniversary of this significant event with a powerful exhibition. A two-year collaborative project, it garnered widespread acclaim, media features and positive feedback from the community.
"Windrush at 75," explored the journeys and challenges faced by the Windrush generation as they embarked on new lives in Britain, recognising their invaluable contributions to society. Through the voices of Basingstoke's own British Caribbean community, the exhibition celebrated the vibrant cultural tapestry of the borough, showcasing a legacy of community and faith, of hope and resilience. It highlights how Basingstoke became a place of sanctuary for many, offering opportunities and a new beginning.
The exhibition featured a captivating blend of personal narratives, historical documents, and stunning artwork, including a special photographic commission by Tamsyn Warde and an immersive soundscape by composer Thomas Baynes, Chalkstream Productions Ltd. It is a testament to the strength of community, the importance of cultural exchange, and the ongoing journey towards a more inclusive and equitable future.
